AWS Conference News
The 2007
American
Wine Society (AWS) Conference in Winston Salem, North Carolina
was well represented by the Wisconsin Vintners Association with 15 members
attending this year. WVA members did well in the AWS Amateur Wine Competition
coming home with a total of 12 awards. Here are the results:
• Tom Courtney won a Gold Metal for his 2007 Lime Wine.
• Len Montalbano won a Gold Metal for his 2005 Merlot, a Silver Metal for
his 2004 Syrah and Bronze Metals for his 2006 Pinot Grigio, 2006 Sauvignon Blanc
and 2006 Chardonnay
• Bill Schneider & George Scovronski teamed up to win five Silver Metals
for their 2002
Cabernet Sauvignon, 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2003 Cabernet Franc, 2002 Syrah and
2003 Petite Sirah. They also won a Bronze Metal for their 2003 Zinfandel.
In addition to his Gold Metal, Tom Courtney completed his fourth year of
a four year wine judge training program. Tom passed the test and and became an
AWS certified wine judge. Congratulations to Tom. If anyone is interested in
learning more about the AWS, its yearly conference and wine judge certification
program, please ask Tom or any of this year’s other medal winners.
The 2007 Inter-Club Challenge
The 2007 Inter-Club Challenge was held in Wausau on
March 24, 2007. The clubs
represented were the Jenny Falls Corkmasters from Wausau, the Central
Wisconsin Amateur Winemakers from Marshfield, the Prairie View Winemakers
Club from Sun Prairie, and the Wisconsin Vintners Association.
This year the
trophy was won by the Jenny Falls Corkmasters club. The WVA came in second
place.

2007 Inter-Club Award List
2007 WVA Club Competition
Our club’s annual winemaking competition was held on
Sunday, March 11. There
were 112 bottles submitted for judging with 19 first place, 22 second place and
35 third place awards given. Best of Show this year was awarded to Don Betlej
for his 2005 Vidal Blanc.

Congratulations to the following WVA club members:
Howard Hasselkus entered 14 wines in the
2006 Homemade Wine Competition at the
Vilas WI County Fair. He received nine First Place awards, two Second Place
and three
Third Place Awards, along with Best-of-Show for his fortified Raspberry wine.
There were
54 entries in 26 classes of which 4 classes were grape and the rest fruit and
berry.
Al Krueger, our member in warm Florida, entered the Indiana State Fair
Competition and
won a Gold award for his Pineapple-coconut wine and a Bronze for his Elderberry
Blossoms wine.
WVA members with awards
from the 2006 Nebraska State Fair competition:
John Rauenbuehler was awarded Best-of-Show
for his Wild Grape. He also won1st Place in the Dry red hybrid and native
American grape category and 3rd Place in the Dry white vinifera grape category.
Bob Wilson won 1st Place in the Dry Fruit
wine category, 2nd Place in the Dry wild native fruit category, 2nd Place
in the Dry red hybrid and native American grape category and 3rd Place in
the Dry red vinifera grape category.
Jeff Stanislawski won 3rd Place in the Dry Grape concentrate category
Mary and Jerry Uthemann won 2nd Place in the
Dry wild native fruit, 3rd Place in the Dry Grape concentrate category, 3rd
Place in the Dry red vinifera grape category and 3rd Place in the Still malomel,
cyser, etc category.
Al Krueger won a 2nd and 3rd Place in the Sweet fruit wine category and a
3rd Place in the Sweet red hybrid & native American grape category

Beer Trade Association
(HWBTA) competition:
Robert Lemanczyk won a Bronze for his 2004 Niagara and a Silver for his
Burgundy-Banana-Elderberry.
Henry Gutmann won a Bronze for his Black Raspberry.
Jeff Stanislawski won a gold for his 2004 Primitivo/Syrah.
Mike Potratz won a Bronze for his 2004 Black Cap Raspberry.
Mary and Jerry Uthemann won a Silver for their 2005 Wildberry/Shiraz and
Bronzes for
their Chilean Malbec, 2003 Super Tuscan and 2004 Strawberry
