April 2009
News
Congratulations to Best of Show Winner
Larry Legare
The 2009 annual club judging was held on Saturday, March
14 at
Clifford's Restaurant. There were 117 entries this
year with a total of 72 attaining an award, including 14 first place ribbons.
The Best of Show winner was Larry Legare for his unusual blended
Gooseberry/Mulberry/Strawberry wine. Runner up
was Jerry Horzewski's Blueberry/Cherry. We had four judging teams each
with two wine stewards along with others helping in different ways. Thanks
to all who helped in making this a smooth running event. For detailed
results, click on this link.
April Program
The April 2009 membership meeting will
begin at 7:30 PM on Wednesday April 8th at
Clifford's Restaurant, 10418 Forest Home Ave.
Our presenters will be two WVA members who have opened new wineries:
Henry Gutmann’s and Pete Laundre's Two Brothers' Wines
in the Village of Pewaukee, WI and Jim and C.J. Wirsching-Neuser's
Vines to Cellar in Port Washington, WI. They will
each discuss the wines they make and the production side of their
businesses. This is a great opportunity to gain insights from these
new entrepreneurs and to give them encouragement and support. Don't
forget to bring an empty glass or two.
Every month we raffle a bottle of wine
to one of our members who has dinner at Clifford's prior to our
meeting. Please plan on joining the group for dinner starting around
6:00 PM. The award wine this month is a Seigneurs de Bergerac, 2006
Bergerac Rose which has “a charming mix of Strawberry and spice on
the nose. It is well balanced & fruity on the palate with good
acidity that leads to a crisp clean finish.”
President's Blog
The club wine judging went
well. Thanks to the superb job Don Betlej did on the paperwork and organizing
the judging, we were able to finish the judging by early afternoon.
Congratulations to Larry Legare for winning Best of Show honors. Thanks
to all who helped out and those who entered wines.
The May meeting
will include the election of officers for the coming year.
Nominations are now open and Joanne Ziarek and Jerry Horzewski
will be seeking volunteers to run for office. Please let them
know if you are willing to serve. The deadline for entering the
State Fair Wine Competition is May 1st. You can download the
rules and entry blank from a link on the Wisconsin State Fair
website and from our website.
Consider eating at
Clifford’s before the next meeting.
Howard Hasselkuss.
Critical Wine Evaluation
At our March membership meeting
we had a Critical Wine Evaluation program where a total of 29 members’ wines
were submitted for evaluation by multiple groups, each led by a table captain.
A total of 48 “judges” scored these wines. See the April newsletter for a
list of the results. Any questions, please contact Howard Hasselkus at
262-786-3298.
2009 WI State Fair Competition
This year’s WI State Fair Amateur Winemaking Competition will take
place on Friday and Saturday, May 15 and 16. The 2009 rules and
regulations and entry forms are posted on both the WI State Fair and
the WVA web sites. Remember we need members’ help by signing up to
participate on these two days. The WVA provides the knowledge base
and personnel for this annual event. There are new rules this year
dealing with the classification of blended wines and wines with
flavor additives. The April 2009 WVA Vintner’s Press has a
detailed description of the changes and the reasons behind them.
Deadline this year for entry forms is May 1st. Don’t be late!
