June Membership Meeting
The June 2007 membership meeting of the Wisconsin Vintners
Association will NOT be at the usual Clifford's but will be a car pool trip to
the Wollersheim Winery, starting at 10:30 AM Saturday, June 9th.
Besides our normal meeting agenda, we will receive extra special treatment by
Philippe Coquard and his staff, including a winery tour and winemaking
presentation along with tasting some of Philippe’s latest wines.
If you want to car pool meet at 7:45 AM at the bus stop at the
south entrance to Brookfield Square just south of Sears next to the Sheraton
Hotel parking lot and we’ll sort out drivers and riders then. We will plan to
leave @ 8:00.
Click on this link:
Wollersheim Winery for detailed maps and driving directions to
the winery from a multiple of starting points. If you are driving on your
own plan to arrive at the winery by 10:00 so you have time to park and take your
picnic items up to the Eagle Shelter before our tour. Park anywhere
in the parking lots near the winery. The picnic shelter is on top of the hill
above the house and is reserved for us from 10:00-2:00 and has music as well as
an extension cord in case someone brings a coffee pot. There is likely to be
construction going on so there is no parking up on the hill near the shelter.
Please notify Joanne by June 7 via phone (262-821-2064) or
e-mail, joanne.ziarek@aurora.org
if you are going and whether you will be meeting with the group @ 7:45 or
driving on your own so we have a head count for the tour and know who plans to
car pool.
We plan to have a picnic lunch after our tour with Philippe so bring
whatever food you want to eat as well as your beverages. You can also
bring a dish or dessert to share if you like. The club will furnish
plastic ware, plates, cups, & napkins. Another food option is to contact
Tim @ TJ’s Catering (608-643-2498) and order a box lunch for $8 that
would be delivered to the winery that morning. The lunch consists of either ham
or turkey sandwich, fruit, potato salad, and a home made cookie. If you are
interested in this option you must call Tim and place your order by June 6.

Notes from the President
It's another month for congratulations and thanks. Thanks to
everyone who helped with the WI State Fair judging on May 18 & 19 and
congratulations to all of the winners. Don Betlej and Howard
Hasselkus did a great job of coordinating this event and their tireless
dedication deserves recognition and thanks from all of us.
Thank you also to the 32 people who dined at Clifford's before the May 16
meeting and were patient due to unexpected wait staff shortages. I'm sure that
the management at Cllifford's appreciated our business as a thank you for their
support of our organization.
There were 76 attendees for our popular wine and food pairing event and member
Tim Harty and chef Pat Scalise did a great job, along with Tim's
helper Pat, in presenting the food, wine, and program. Chef Pat will share his
recipes with us due to popular request as soon as he figures out how to "down
size" them for a normal serving and we will publish them then.
Congratulations to the newly elected officers who will assume their positions in
June. We also thank outgoing board members Chuck Howell and Barb
Betlej for their years of service and know they will still be involved
because they each have a spouse on the board! It's kind of a "two-for-one" bonus
for the club.
Our next three months will be filled with more "social" events starting with the
June 9 car pool trip to meet with Philippe at Wollersheim Winery and
bring our own picnic lunch. Then there's more eating/socializing with the July
11 annual pot luck/cook out on the patio at Lakefront Brewery with our
host, brewery owner Russ Klisch; and finally, our annual picnic August 18 at
Calhoun Park in New Berllin. See you this summer!

Dinner Dance
Planning Meeting Appeal
Whether you who have attended a club dinner dance in the
past or not, we are looking for some help in the planning of
next year's, February 2008 event.
Besides being a major social event, the annual dinner
dance is the club's sole fundraiser of the year.
To make the 2008 diner dance an even bigger success
than in the past we need input from past attendees (i.e.
what was good or not so good about it, what can be changed,
what about something new and fresh?).
Never attended but maybe were involved in other
organized entertainment activity?
Your experiences are needed as well.
There will be a planning meeting on June 14th at 7:00 PM at
the home of James Remus (last year's co-chairman),
303 Menomonee Ave, South Milwaukee WI, 414-571-9110.
Please consider joining in and let Jim know if you have an
interest.
WI State
Fair Amateur Winemakers Competition
Congratulations also to the WVA members who won a total of 64
ribbons at this year’s WI State Fair Amateur Winemakers Competition. Best
of Show - Sweet Wine winner was Howard Hasselkus for his Riesling.
Club members Armin Engelmann, Jerry Wanty and Larry Bannister also
won Best of Category awards. Click
here for a complete listing of the judging
results. Judging sheets and award ribbons will be mailed to the
participants within the next month or so.
Club
Winemaking Equipment for Members' Use
WVA owns some equipment for winemaking, tasting and judging,
among other items. Click
here for a list of these items. They
are available to all members. Just contact a board member for
availability. Also, please consider contributing equipment that may be of
value to others, but no longer useful to you.
July Meeting
at the Lakefront Brewery
Our fourth annual cookout /pot-luck picnic will be on Wednesday, July
11th starting at 6:00
PM, at the
Lakefront Brewery patio
along the Milwaukee River with Russ Klisch, president, as our host .
Bring a dish to pass, an appetizer, or a dessert plus something to
grill, if you wish, something to drink and your own plates, napkins,
utensils, etc. To thank Russ for his hospitality, please bring
an extra bottle of your homemade finest as a thank you gift.
There is no “official” program this evening, just an opportunity for
some good fellowship in a pleasant place on a pleasant evening. We
may also have a brief tour of the brewery with Russ if there is enough
interest. This was a very popular event last year and is a great
way to spend a warm summer evening. Mark your calendars and
plan to attend.
Advanced Winemaking Project
Please go to the web site's
Wine Making Info page to learn about a
new club program developed to advance winemaking in our club. Propose a
project and if approved your costs will be picked up by the club (up to $30.00).
