March News
March Membership Meeting
The March 2007 membership meeting of the Wisconsin Vintners Association will
begin at 7:30 PM on Wednesday the 14th at Clifford’s Restaurant, 10418 Forest
Home Ave. John Newburg from the Newburg Wine Company will be presenting four
wines that he distributes in the area. These wines are from the Martin Ray
Winery which is one of California’s oldest wineries, having been established in
1881.
We will be scoring these wines so you will be able to tune up your critical wine
evaluation skills. Please bring one or two wine glasses. John will be
joining us for dinner before the meeting, so how about eating with us and
getting to know John? If you do, then you will be eligible for the monthly wine
drawing. The wine for this month will be provided by the Newburg Wine Company.
Notes from the President
As always there are many people to thank this month. The
February 3rd dinner dance was a big success again this year as well as a great
social event. Thanks to co-chairs Erv Herman and Jim Remus and to everyone who
donated items or time and helped in any way. A special thank you to Tom
Polzin who made the excellent potpourri wine for this year's dinner. Watch for a
report in next month's newsletter and mark your calendars for February 2nd,
2008, for next year's gala fund raising event.
Check out our web site under Club News and Events
to get to the link for Anne
Schamberg's Journal/Sentinel interview with Howard Hasselkus and the great
publicity
given to our club. Another section to check out is under
Club Information where you
can find the job descriptions of the various club officers in the By-Laws
section. Elections
are coming up in May so check this out in case you are interested in serving on
the board and let one of the board members know.
Thank you to everyone who offered help in these first weeks following the sudden
death on February 8 of John Rauenbuehler, our beloved friend,
newsletter/Vintner's Press editor, and Corresponding Secretary (this edition of
the newsletter is made possible through the efforts of Don Betlej and Tom
Courtney). John was a faithful, long time member of the club and will be
missed by all of us in so many ways. He was a gifted writer with a great sense
of humor, a friend and mentor to many, a husband, father, and grandfather, a
fine wine maker who often urged us to "bring a bottle of our best to share".
He was a humble and gentle man who always looked for the good in others and was
willing to lend a hand whenever and wherever it was needed. John was many things
to many people but, above all, John was a truly good man. We'll miss you,
dear friend.

WVA Amateur Winemaking Club Judging:
The Wisconsin Vintners Association (WVA) Amateur Winemaking Club
Judging is held annually and is open to all club members. The 2007 event will be
held at Clifford’s Restaurant, 10418 Forest Home Ave on Sunday, March 11th. The purpose of this
event is threefold:
• An opportunity for club members to have their wines evaluated in a formal
manner, based
upon similar judging criteria used by major wine competitions around the
country.
• Club members can get an early indication of their wine’s potential to receive
an award at the
Wisconsin State Fair that is held later in the year.
• The Club Judging provides a training opportunity for prospective wine judges
and stewards. The WVA provides the judges and stewards used in the WI State Fair competition.

2007 Jenny Falls
Corkmasters
Inter-Club Wine Challenge
For the past few years other amateur winemaking clubs in
Wisconsin have been coming together for an annual winemaking competition.
Last year the Jenny Falls Corkmasters, the Central Wisconsin Amateur Wine Club
and the Sun Prarie Wine Club participated in the event. This year the WVA
has been invited and we thankfully have agreed to join in the fun.
This year's competition will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2007
at the Labor Temple in Wausau, WI. Each club is asked to provide a total
of 30 entries. We'd like everyone to participate in this event. Please click
here for more information.
Advanced Winemaking Project
Please go to the web site's
Wine Making Info page to learn about a
new club program developed to advance winemaking in our club. Propose a
project and if approved your costs will be picked up by the club (up to $30.00).
