Wine and Food Pairing

The May 2009 membership meeting will begin at 7:30 PM on Wednesday, May 13th at the Norway House, located at 7507 W. Oklahoma Ave, Milwaukee, WI.  The program is our annual Wine & Food Pairing.  Tom Courtney and other club members will be sharing their knowledge about the wines and the various foods to be sampled. Five foods and five wines (three champagnes and two table wines) will be presented. The foods include shrimp, two cheeses, grilled pork, and a dessert.

The cost for this event is just $15.00 per person for members. Non-members are also invited at $25.00 each.  Seating is limited to a maximum of 80 people. Pre-registration is required for this special event by May 6th.  Contact Tom Courtney at 262-241-6638 or at tcandlac@wi.rr.com.  Everyone attending should bring a champagne glass or two (if you have them) plus two regular wine glasses.

President's Blog

May is a busy month. Our regular meeting is the popular food and wine pairing and then we have the State Fair Amateur Wine Competition.  It looks like Tom and Linda Courtney have put together an exceptional program with good food and plenty of wine. Bring glasses and especially some champagne glasses.  Get your reservations in.

We will also have an election of board members for the coming year. The deadline for entering the State Fair Wine competition was May 1st.  Our club does the judging for this event so we need lots of help both Friday night and Saturday, so please consider joining us. We serve a lunch on Saturday, so you are asked to bring a dish to pass.

2009 WI State Fair Competition

This year’s WI State Fair Amateur Winemaking Competition will take place on Friday and Saturday, May 15 and 16. The judging takes place at the Tommy G. Thompson Youth Center which is located at the northwest corner of the fairgrounds with the entrance on 84th street, one block south of I-94. Remember we need members’ help by signing up to participate on these two days. The WVA provides the knowledge base and personnel for this annual event. There will be a signup sheet at the May meeting where we will also have free parking passes to be used at the event. If you can’t make it to the meeting, contact Don Betlej at dbetlej@wi.rr.com and the pass will be mailed to you.

As in the past, on Saturday we will be having a pot-luck lunch. We ask all to bring a dish to pass. Also for all those who have sent in their competition entry and W-9 form: the entry bottles are due at any of the eight drop off locations by Monday, May 11, or at the State Fair Tommy G. Thompson Youth Center on Friday, May 15, between the hours of 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.

June Program at Wollersheim Winery

The Saturday, June 13th program will take place at the Wollersheim Winery in Prairie du Sac, WI.  Philippe Coquard will conduct a training session for us that is similar to the one he uses to train his staff in the tasting room.  The program will run from 10 AM to noon.

After the program, people are welcome to use the vineyard or wine garden tables for a picnic. We have used these tables in the past and it is a great way to enjoy a bring your own picnic. To assist the winery in setting up for our program, please let Tom Courtney know if you are planning to attend. You can reach Tom at 262-241-6638 or at tcandlac@wi.rr.com.

Slate of Candidates set for May Election

The slate of candidates was presented at the April membership meeting and nominations were accepted from the floor at that time.  The election will be held at our May 13th meeting.  Please note that as always, all members are invited to attend our May meeting at the Norway House, even if they have no interest in staying for the paid Wine & Food Pairing program after.
