The October 2006 WVA membership meeting will begin at 7:30 PM on Wednesday the
11th. The site as always is Clifford’s Restaurant, 10418 Forest Home Ave, Hales
Corners, WI. WVA is sponsoring a program called the Advanced
Winemaking Project to evaluate some of the practices that winemakers in
our club use to make homemade wine. Tim Larsen will have the honor of
beginning the series of presentations. Tim submitted a proposal to the
project committee which was approved. Tim's presentation will describe how
he generated two different fermentations using different types of oak.
Meeting attendees will be able to taste and evaluate wine from both batches. Wine of the Month Please consider having supper at Clifford’s Restaurant before
the membership meeting. Quite a few members gather about 6 to 6:30 PM to enjoy a
meal and each other. It’s the club’s way of saying thanks to Jack for letting us
use the hall for our meetings (just try to find a restaurant that will allow you
to bring in your own wines without a corkage fee). For the past few
months we have been having a drawing to select one of the diners to receive a
bottle of pretty nice wine. In October, the wine will be a Candoni Merlot.
It is described as “To achieve its excellent quality and rich flavor CANDONI
uses only the finest grapes grown in the fruili region. Their Merlot is a
perfect complement to roast meats, pasta and cheese. Serve at room temperature
to enjoy its peak flavor. A Note from the President Thanks to Larry Legare for taking charge of the September
meeting, to Debbie Stankus for taking over the name tags and to Howard
Hasselkus, Dave Brandt and Chuck and Mary Howell who volunteered to be on the
Program Committee and met to plan some great upcoming programs while the
Betlej’s are on a leave of absence. It is wonderful to have such willing
and able members to step up and pitch in when needed. See the separate flyer for
information on the Harvest Dinner, one of our larger events and a real bargain
for members since the club subsidizes half of the cost of the dinner. Jerry and
Doris Horzewski (and their helpers) are planning a special evening so send in
your reservations soon. Advanced Winemaking Project It's the time of year to start thinking about the upcoming fruit
harvest and your fall winemaking projects. Please go to the web site's
Wine Making Info page to learn about a
new club program developed to advance winemaking in our club. Propose a
project and if approved your costs will be picked up by the club (up to $30.00). Components of Wine On Tuesday, November 14, 2006, we will begin a four-week course on the Components of Wine. The course will provide instruction on how to identify the primary components of wine and when they are in balance, and how to identify the aromas of wine and wine faults. See the flyer and registration form below that provides details of the course, dates, times, location, cost, etc. Click here:
Components of Wine
Registration Form 2006 Harvest Dinner The WVA Harvest Dinner will be held on Sunday, November 5. This
will be an enjoyable evening with good food and good wine (you’ll bring your
best to show it off). There will also be some extra entertainment featured.
In previous years we’ve had quizzes to test our knowledge of wine (a sort of
wine trivia game). Half of the cost of the meal is paid by the club's
general fund. It's Dues Time Again As long as you are making out checks, dues are due in September.
For the $15.00 you
could get a majority of it “back” with your subscription to Winemaker. In
addition to that
the club picks up half the cost of the Harvest Dinner and there are wine
tastings at membership meetings and most of the time we don’t charge for
them. The beer at the picnic is paid for by the club. Please send
your check for $15 to treasurer Tom Courtney, 10709 De La Warr Circle, Mequon,
WI 53092 or bring it to the next meeting. Calendar of Events
