September 2009 News

The September 2008 membership meeting of the Wisconsin Vintners Association will begin at 7:30 PM on Wednesday, September 9th at Clifford’s Restaurant, 10418 Forest Home Ave, Hales Corners, WI.  Harvest time is fast approaching so for our program this month, Jim Remus will present a detailed overview of the winemaking process, concentrating on fruit wines.  While this will greatly benefit our newest members, our experienced members will be asked to offer their knowledge and experience to the discussion. Please bring a bottle of your favorite fruit wine to share as evidence of your winemaking technique.

For the past few years now, each month we awarded a bottle of wine to one of our members who had dinner at Clifford’s prior to the monthly meeting.  We will continue this tradition again this year.  Please plan on joining the group for dinner, starting around 6:00 PM, before our membership meeting.  The award wine this month is a bottle of Chateau Les Gentis, a 2003 Bordeaux.  “This is a medium bodied un-oaked, Merlot-based Bordeaux.  A delightfully fragrant wine with aromas of cherry and spice. It will be good with pork, fowl and pasta dishes.”

Thanks to Bill and Karen Schneider, George and Mary Scovronski, Tim Larsen, Al Downs and Tom Courtney for a great WVA picnic.  I was unable to attend, but I understand we had a good attendance, plenty of chicken and corn, games and no rain. Our new season starts with our September meeting at Clifford’s, so check out the meeting notice. We are creating a list of areas in which we need help for the 2009-2010 WVA year.  Please consider volunteering for one of these tasks and assignments that will be published soon.

The Weather Was Near Perfect

Our annual club picnic was held on Saturday, August 15.  It was a nice summer day for eating grilled sweet corn, rotisserie chicken and a host of potluck hors d’oeuvres, salads, potato dishes and desserts.  A disinterested person walking past our great picnic spot could have spotted what looked like a wine bottle for each of the 73 in attendance.  This person would have also seen our group enjoying the wine, good food and each other while also having fun participating in the bean bag throw and washer throw contests.  The team of Pat and Marge Marcella won the washer throw event. Dean Grulke along with his partner Jim Remus won the bean bag throw this year. Thanks to Jerry Horzewski's granddaughters for their help in running and recruiting the players for the games.

Al and Mary Downs
again this year brought their restored Model A mail truck along with their blackberry merlot and peach belinni slush makers on the back.  A big thanks goes out to the picnic committee, Bill & Karen Schneider and George & Mary Scovronski for their hard work in making sure that everything was just right. Thanks to Tom and Linda Courtney for bringing the chicken, to Tim Larsen for bringing and organizing the corn and to Chuck Howell and Rick Markham for doing the grilling. Thanks also to Chuck & Mary Howell and Rick and Jo Markham for helping set up for the event.

It's Annual Dues Time Again

It's the start of another club year and that means it's dues time. The cost of a membership remains at $15.00 for a year of informative meetings, wine tastings, access to grapes and juice, other subsidized club events and just plain fun with people bonding together with a similar passion, home winemaking.

Please send your check, payable to the Wisconsin Vintners Association, to our treasurer Mike Bell at 612 Fairview Ave, South Milwaukee, WI 53172 or bring it to the next meeting.  Please use the included dues payment form that will also help us update our files with any member contact changes since last year.
