The WI State Fair Amateur Winemaking Competition will be held this year on Friday, May 16 at 6:00 PM. and Saturday, May 17 at 9:00 PM.  Our club provides most of the personnel for this event. We need all kinds of help, including judges and people to be wine stewards. What does a wine steward do? Please see the included document which explains the stewarding process. Never did it before? It’s easy. Mary & Chuck Howell, this year’s co-chairpersons, would love to show you how.

The judging takes place at the Tommy G. Thompson Youth Center which is located at the northwest corner of the fairgrounds with the entrance on 84th street, one block south of I-94. There will again be a signup sheet at the May meeting where we will also have free parking passes to be used at the event. If you can’t make it to the meeting, give Don Betlej a call (262-679-3872) and the pass will be mailed to you.

As in the past, on Saturday we will be having a Pot Luck Lunch.  We ask all to bring a dish to pass, just as you would to church!

INSTRUCTIONS TO STEWARDS

Present the list of wines to the judges and ask them to determine in which order they want to judge them.  Serve each judge a glass of wine, about a quarter filled, and the judging form that matches the wine.  Be sure the judges have water, bread, etc. on their table and the spit buckets are not too full.  Remove used glasses and filled out judging forms from judges table.

Make sure the sheets are filled out completely with judges assigned number and score.  If scores do not agree on placement (1st, 2nd, etc.) bring this to the attention of the judges.  If disagreement cannot be resolved, the Competition Chairman should be informed.  Place judging sheets in numeric order, staple and place in “IN” basket at the data entry desk.

1st place bottles will be collected, gassed and placed in 1st place box.  Balance of bottles go back to original boxes in assigned space.

Try to stay on top of things and get the judges to move faster. Assure the next set is ready on a tray in plain view of them.  Deliver this next set at the same time that the previous set is picked up. Place dirty glasses behind steward table.  They will be taken to the kitchen and replaced with clean glasses.

HAVE FUN!
